Extract from Broadsheet printed by E Brice, High Street, Exeter. April 6th 1801.

"John Deane, aged 28, a native of Ireland, lately belonging to the Prince man of war, on the evening of last Nov. 5, robbed Allen Marnell of 5s. on the highway between Stonehouse and Dock, and immediately attempted to rob a second man, discharging a pistol, the ball from which tore his neckcloth and set it on fire. Deane was taken on the spot. John Burn being tried as his accomplice, before the evidence was closed Deane exclaimed, My Lord, you need no give yourself further trouble; I fired the pistol and one man is enough to die for this affair. Burn was acquitted. Deane was attended by a priest of Roman persuasion."
