William McGregor, aged 40, was born in the north of Ireland, apart from whence it could not be expected that persons of cultivated principle (among the lower class) could be produced: This unhappy man was consequently an influence, and being unacquainted with the ways of life when he entered upon its wide stage, surrounded by temptations on all sides, he embraced an unjustifiable conduct. After leaving his country,he rambled from place to place with his family and at length left his family in Scotland, came to England, and entered for a soldier; he was a private in the 67th regiment quartered at Plymouth, when he committed the robbery for which he suffered.
